Information on Sands Manukau

Sands Manukau is a registered charity supporting families who have experienced the death of a baby at any stage of pregnancy and up to a year following birth. We enable grieving parents to recognize their baby ...as a member of the family offering practical advice and support materials that create the memories that last a life time. We offer bereaved parents the opportunity to share experiences, talk and listen, offering empathy and understanding for their situation through phone support, one on one contact and monthly meetings. We are not counsellors but we are all bereaved parents who volunteer our time to support other parents and their families.
Sands Manukau volunteers are available to support parents during their time in hospital or at home following the birth if required.
Parents can be supported throughout a pregnancy where the baby is terminally ill and will not live long after birth by someone who has been in a similar situation. Whether the choice is made to interrupt the pregnancy or continue with it, we are here to help.

What they Offer:
During your stay in hospital - We are available to assist with memory making and parenting ideas while you and your baby are in hospital. Would you like to talk to someone who has been through a similar experience and understands what you are going through? If so please ring us or ask your bereavement team member to ring us on your behalf and we will arrange this.
Free Hand/Foot Casting – We cover the cost of 2 hands and 2 feet mounted on a granite or wooden base with name plaque. Included in this service are photos (placed on CD) and inkless hand/foot prints.
Care Bags - for parents whose baby dies from 12 weeks gestation up to one year of age. These Care Bags contain various memory making opportunities including items such as a special memories book, candle, and 2 teddy bears (one for mum, one for baby).
Miscarriage Packs - For parents whose baby dies less than 12 weeks gestation.
Monthly Meetings – These adult only meetings allow for the expression grief in a safe and caring environment. Parents who share similar experiences can often listen, acknowledge and accept feelings that others may find hard to comprehend. The group meetings offer a non-judgmental space to share stories, concerns and feelings.
Coffee Mornings – These monthly mornings are a great way to get together

flowers: Yellow bells, Alamanda and Hibiscus.

eeYellow bells, Alamanda and Hibiscus.
They are some of my favourite things.

Kai Chung School were my best years,
The students were respectful.
The colleagues friendly.

I did have short teaching periods
At Kuching High and SMK Binatang Govt High.
But they were nothing like Kai Chung.

That is why I am flying miles and miles,
Across the ocean and sea.
chalking up carbon footprints to be at their reunion.

The song and dance ,
"There is a welcome here for you,
in Kai Chung School."
Rings in my ear.

The garden centre man in Singapore tells me this is Yellow Bell, I have never seen it before. They look like tiny Alamandas. They can be seen in many of the gardens of landed properties in Singapore. This was taken at Koven, the Scotland of this garden city. My sister G lives here.
Alamandas and Hibiscus are the flowers I associate Kai Chung school with. I was the house teacher of two sports houses when I was teaching as a 19 and 20 year old. I think of Lynn Wong aka Ah Leng, she remembers fondly that I was leading her cheer very enthusiastically,

C Apparently, the next year in 1975, I was in charge of the Hibiscus house. Though I had forgotten. There were photos to proof it that I was in the winning house, and I was a very active cheer leader.

This is a special Hibiscus. It has another layer dangling like a lantern. The one below too is a multi layered. Not the Bunya Raya, the National flower of Malaysia which is one layer.

Sports day in Kai Chung was a big thing. The male teachers and some students (I think male students) went to the swamp and cut loads of palm fronds. How they carted them back, I need to ask the students when I see them. The girls stay at the allocated part of their filed, and weaved walls, and soon they erected a grass shelter. If you think the contestants of "Survivor" did a great thing, the kids in Kai Chung did a far greater job. It was all organic, hence my meme Save the World. There was a prize for the best shelter which ws rectangle, not rounded like a Samoan Fale.

Here I was with Miss Chieng, my best buddy and colleague. Since I left the school for Canada, I had seen her only one.

flowers: canon balls

Photographed at East Coast Park in Singapore. In another occasion, many years ago, in Penang, I had a photo taken too.

WE just call this the Cannonball tree. The fruit has exactly just that, a big about 8 inch cannon. We often mistake it to be a jungle dible MAWANG mango family fruit, and the flower, makes me think of the Mickey mouse flower, and my late uncle Francis.

Couroupita guianensis
Aubl.
Couroupita guianensis, whose common names include Ayahuma and the Cannonball Tree, is an evergreen tree allied to the Brazil Nut (Bertholletia excelsa), and is native to tropical northern South America and to the southern Caribbean. In India it has been growing for the past two or three thousand years at least, as attested by textual records[citation needed]; hence it is possible that it is native to India also. It's rare, but also found in Bangladesh. It is known as নাগকেশর or নাগালিংগম in Bengali.

It's part of the family Lecythidaceae and grows up to 25 m (82 ft) in height. The "Cannonball Tree" is so called because of its brown cannon-ball-like fruits. The majority of these trees outside their natural environment have been planted as a botanical curiosity, as they grow very large, distinctive flowers. Its flowers are orange, scarlet and pink in color, and form large bunches measuring up to 3m in length. They produce large spherical and woody fruits ranging from 15 to 24 cm in diameter, containing up to 200 or 300 seeds apiece.

Skywatch Friday: I am flying in a jet plane.+

It's been ancient history since I flew alone. This time, I did and I got a window seat. In hindsight, I would never ask for a window seat again. You have to ask the person at the aisle seat to get out when you go to the toilet.

I did however make two friends. A woman sat at the aisle seat next to me, and she was waving to another over at the other side of the plane. I told her I was happy to swap seats with her friend. It was a bit of hassle swapping, but I felt good, doing a kind deed. They were sisters in law going on a holiday. I had a good chat before we parted our ways.

At the new seat, I chatted with the man and we found out we had mutual friends. I felt tired and tried to sleep, but it was hard.

I also made a new friend, a good friend of my friend J. Small world.

watery wed: Australia and the ocean

It is a long flight from New Zealand to Singapore. It was the first time I sat at a window seat and flew a day flight. It took a loong time to fly across the continent of Australia. I think I spotted the end of Australia as it meets the ocean.

Pantene Pro-V Intensive Damage Repair Oil

Plagued with split ends and dryness?

I don't have split ends or dryness, but my hair has one nasty habit of curling out instead of curling in. Using the hair curling tongs make them brittle.

The Pantene Pro-V Intensive Damage Repair Oil is meant to fight frizz and help repair damage by coating each strand with the intense formula, sealing the cuticle to help protect hair from breakage.

Lais Koelle, Pantene Senior Scientist says, “The highly concentrated restorative components of the Intensive Damage Repair Oil facilitate the protection of fragile cuticles from the outside, while working to prevent protein loss from inside the hair shaft.”
Can't wait to see how effective it is and have my wild child hair in control.
I am given the Pantene Pro-V Intensive Damage Repair Oil to review. I am not paid except I got a sample of the product to try it out.

Ruby red/rednesday: red plane

Today, I printed my third edition of my book. My friend Megan has read it and may she be comforted as it is the EDD of her twins, Peanut and Poppet. How I wish as Megan said we could have a special vehicle to go up to heaven and bring them down to us. Megan is also missing her other sons Theo and Christopher and two others whom I forgot their names. Kisses and hugs to you, Megan.
Megan, I share with you the EDD of Andrew. 20th October 1989. Today would have been Andrew’s due date. But he jumped the gun and came 3 weeks early. An irrational me looked at Andrew, and asked him, “Why did you come earlier than when you were supposed to? If you came today, you would be a normal baby.” I was consumed with sadness; I didn’t offer to hold Andrew at his feeding time.
The duty nurse asked if I wasn’t feeling so good this morning. I told her, and started to cry. She gave me a hug. She told the other duty nurses, and they gave me extra TLC. With their loving care, my feeling of despondent slowly subsided. Realistically, Andrew had arrived, and he was Campomelic regardless of when he came. Nothing could change that.

Bereaved mums like Megan, and I and all those in Sands sometimes wish there is a vehicle which can go up to Heaven and take our loved babies and children back to us. Won't it be awesome if this Qantas plane can do just that?

Scenic Sunday/Sunday bridge: Bridge for kids

A play bridge in the yard of Pt Chevalier Baptist church.
Wish they had them when I was young.
I remember when I was a teen, and I was baby sitting my younger siblings. Our church was next to a kindergarten. We went to their playground and were chased away by the nuns who ran the kindergarten. There was quite a controversy.
" It's Sunday, nobody is using it, since it is idle, why not let the church kids use it."
"If the equipment breaks, who is going to pay for the repairs?
" If the equipment breaks, it's already faulty?"
"Remember, we raised the funds to build it in the first place."

Beep! Beep! Beep! my new word after I went to a course where I had to share telling a story and my boss the DP was there. No, I didn't learn that word, I had to use the word and not my other S  word.

skywatch Friday

Two months ago, the weather was still fine. Now, we are in the middle winter.
