skywatch Friday: Clouds at my window

http://skyley.blogspot.com/ The sky changes everyday. Life should be a slow pace and enjoy the flowers, no, I mean the sky.

watery wednesday, Thursday them song: Ferry

When I was in primary school, Dad used to drive us up to Durin where my maternal grandparents and many relatives lived. One day, we were excited, we camped over night at Grandpa's place so that we could get on to the ferry the first day it sailed across the river to the other side of the river. We were awed by a boat that could take so many cars. Best of all, it was free.

Alas, over the years, people were impatient about the slowness of the ferry. They asked for a bridge which took many years to build. In fact it took so long that it was still under construction when I had left the country for many years.

Today, the ferry is no more, gone is the giant boat of my child hood memories. My grandparents have gone to their homes in the skies, so have my parents, I have yet to drive over the bridge that replaced the ferry that gave me such joy and pride.

Ferry Cross The Mersey - Liverpool Songs

http://youtu.be/eOQAKiEurWA

Life goes on day after day
Hearts torn in every way

So ferry 'cross the Mersey
'cause this land's the place I love
and here I'll stay

People they rush everywhere
Each with their own secret care

So ferry 'cross the Mersey
and always take me there
The place I love

People around every corner
They seem to smile and say
We don't care what your name is boy
We'll never turn you away

So I'll continue to say
Here I always will stay

So ferry 'cross the Mersey
'cause this land's the place I love
and here I'll stay
and here I'll stay

Narcissus 'Erlicheer' double flowered narcissus
Narcissus 'Erlicheer' belongs to the plant family AMARYLLIDACE and Genus Narcissus

A fan brought me this bunch of Erlicheer. It is winter here, and the florist told her that this is a hot house variety. It brings "early cheer" to the recipient.

In Southeast Asia the flowers are used to colour food. In Malay cooking, an aqueous extract is used to colour glutinous rice for kuih ketan (also known as pulut tai tai in Peranakan/Nyonya cooking) and in nonya chang. In Thailand, a syrupy blue drink is made called nam dok anchan (น้ำดอกอัญชัน). In Burma the flowers are used as food, often they are dipped in batter and fried.

The flowers of this vine have the shape of human female pudenda, hence the Latin name of the genus "Clitoria", from "clitoris". (Synonyms: Clitoris principissae.)[3] "Ternatea", the name of the species, comes from Ternate, a location in Indonesia.[citation needed] In some languages (Tamil, Malayalam) it is named after the seashell, which is a euphemism for a woman's external sexual organs.[citation needed]

Owing to its similarity to a human body part, this plant has been ascribed properties affecting the same (a phenomenon also found in connection with the mandrake, among other plants). It was used traditionally to cure sexual ailments, like infertility and gonorrhea, to control menstrual discharge, and also as an aphrodisiac.

watery wednesday/Thursday Theme song Home by the sea

http://hootin--anni.blogspot.com/

http://waterywednesday.blogspot.com/

http://youtu.be/DNcZ8Nv5EAc

phil collins and genesis
Home by the sea
Home by the sea
Home by the sea
Home by the sea

Creeping up the blind side, shinning up the wall
Stealing through the dark of night
Climbing through a window, stepping to the floor
Checking to the left and the right
Picking up the pieces, putting them away
Something doesn't feel quite right

Help me someone, let me out of here
Then out of the dark was suddenly heard
Welcome to the home by the sea

Coming out the woodwork through the open door
Pushing from above and below
Shadows but no substance in the shape of men
Round and down and sideways they go
Adrift without direction, eyes that hold despair
Then as one they sign and they moan

Help us someone, let us out of here
Living here so long undisturbed
Dreaming of the time we were free
So many years ago
Before the time when we first heard
Welcome to the home by the sea
[ From: http://www.elyrics.net/read/g/genesis-lyrics/home-by-the-sea-lyrics.html ]

Sit down, sit down
Sit down, sit down, sit down
As we relive our lives in what we tell you

Images of sorrow, pictures of delight
Things those go to make up a life
Endless days of summer, longer nights of gloom
Waiting for the morning life
Scenes of unimportance, photos in a frame
Things those go to make up a life

Help us someone, let us out of here
'Cos living here so long undisturbed
Dreaming of the time we were free
So many years ago
Before the time when we first heard
Welcome to the home by the sea

Sit down, sit down
Sit down, sit down, sit down, sit down
As we relive our lives in what we tell you
Let us relive our lives in what we tell you

Sit down, sit down, sit down
'Cos you won't get away
No with us you will stay
For the rest of your days, sit down
As we relive our lives in what we tell you
Let us relive our lives in what we tell you, oh

Cactus Wine, anyone?

The Opuntia lindheimeri, more commonly known as the prickly pear cactus, is a great choice for making a succulent cactus wine. This cactus grows in abundance in the American southwest and blooms a reddish purple fruit in fall, which gives off a sweet, watermelon-like essence when peeled. The fruit is what the wine is made from in a traditional--but uniquely western--wine-making process.

Weekend reflection: I was banking on living for a long time yet.

In this photo taken in 1972, we were in lower 6, Tien Fen and I were actually seated next to each other. You see her, the pretty shoulder hair? and I the plain short hair.

http://newtowndailyphoto.blogspot.com/

Last Thursday night, I thought I was fit as a fiddle and though I have lived past my half a century, I was banking for living for at least another quarter. Then I was in Emergency Dept for unexplained chest pains for half an hour. It was good to check it out, and I had ECGs, blood tests and Xrays. It turned out I was having a viral infection which after a week, is still causing me discomfort and reminding me to slow down.

Nothing prepared me from the news a friend just sent me. A mutual friend had died. All three of us started school on the same day, and Tien Fen was my class mate when we were in the last year of High School. I had not seen her for 38 years, and I not going to see her again.

Today's her funeral and I reflect on my own immortality. Tien Fen is not the first to pass on. In fact she's the 4th. I wonder what her eulogy will be like, and what mine will be like. In the mean time, I better live my life so that I will leave behind a legacy and my friends and acquaintance will sing, For she is a jolly good fellow.

Farewell my friend. You were the sweet classmate that we in form 6 regarded you as the bridge that spanned across the Arts students to the Science students.

Thursday Theme Song: The helicopter song

http://hootin--anni.blogspot.com/

http://youtu.be/QdwGkJHh4TY

And it's[G] Up like a bird and high [C] over the [G] city
"Three men are [Em] missing" I [C] heard the warder [D] cry
"Sure it [G] must have been a bird that [C] flew into the [D] prison
Or [C] one of those new Ministers" [D] said the [C] warder [D] from Mount[G]joy

Early one evening as the branchmen they were sleeping
A little helicopter flew in from the sky
Down into the yard where some prisoners were walking
"Get ready for inspection" said the warder in the ´Joy

Down in the yard through the pushing and the shoving
Three of the prisoners they climbed upon the bird
And up and away they went into the grey skies
"I think someone escaped" said the warder in the ´Joy

Over in the Dail they were drinking gin and brandy
The Minister for Justice was soaking up the sun
Then came this little message that some prisoners were escaping
"I think it´s three of the Provos" said the warder in the ´Joy

"Search every hole search every nook and cranny
Let no man rest until these men are found,
For this cannot happen to a law and order government."
"I think you´ll never find them said the warder in Mountjoy"

Ruby Red/Rednesday/watery Wednesday: Ruby for keeps.

http://workofthepoet.blogspot.com

http://www.suelovescherries.blogspot.com/

http://waterywednesday.blogspot.com/

Twenty one years ago, when I left the familiar New Zealand to a new country Singapore, Diane was one of the first ruby gems I picked up. It is her birthday today.

It's not only a lot of water has flowed under the bridge, but oceans of currents had physically divided us. But Diane's ruby had never lost it's shine. She was a comfort when I was still grieving.

We were not to know that sadly she and her daughter in law would join my infamous club of bereaved mum and grand mother.

Diane, happy birthday. You will always have a place in my heart.

These photos were taken on our way to your place. I didn't tell you, we took a wrong turn and met some very handsome man playing Aussie style of "hot curling." They even invited us to have a game with them. You can tell a story of Australia without the beach and water.
