The railway station in Parnell used to be very grand. Trains go over many bridges. I was just there to photograph the train cross this bridge.

Watery Wednesday: Weir

http://waterywednesday.blogspot.com/

These are weirs, says the water engineer.

I only knew a weir in theory that there is such a word when I played Scrabble.

A weir (IPA: /wɪɚ/) (also known as a lowhead dam) is a small overflow-type dam commonly used to raise the level of a river or stream. Weirs have traditionally been used to create mill ponds in such places. Water flows over the top of a weir, although some weirs have sluice gates which release water at a level below the top of the weir. The crest of an overflow spillway on a large dam is often called a weir.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weir

I used to grit my teeth when we had to drive miles and miles, and walk miles and miles to see an engineering structure. Not any more, we met an engineer's kid, and he descibed the same feeling as me. Much later, I met an engineer's wife, and she too, talked about the same thing. Now, I just follow along, as we drive and walk miles and miles.

There is a Chinese saying, JIA JI SUI JI, meaning, marry a chicken, follow a chicken,
JIA GOU SUI GOU, marry a dog, follow a dog.

I just watched a distance measuring wheel being used in a news story when I saw the lady in red with this machine. She was quite far away when I decided to take her photo, so you see only a glimpse of the machine.

Cala lilies grow both in the garden and in the wild. I like them for their simplicity. They grew wild in my grand father's garden in Borneo. So when I came to live in New Zealand, seeing them reminded me of my childhood.

Addition: Thank you maiaT, Callas are still used in New Zealand, because it is such a loved flower, especially the white ones. They make a simple but very elegant and classic wedding bouquet.

When I was given the cala bouquet on Friday. They were long-stemmed and tied with pink organza ribbon. Some of the kids asked why I had the bouquet, I said I was getting married. LOL. They are not surprised because there are many TV wedding shows.

Here I was trying to get Sam to model for me, but he was a very reluctant bride.

weekend bridge: Waitomo Caves

http://bayphoto.blogspot.com/

Behind the group of black water rafters is a tiny bridge. The stream of rushing water comes from the subterranean caves and emerges from a tiny hole. At this time last year, I went to our Waitomo caves.

I didn't join the Black water rafters this time. Ten years ago, I went with my twelve year old daughter. It was she who wanted to do it, and she was too small( physically) to go by her self with the others. So poor mum had it go. It was an adventure of a life time. Three hours in the caves and submerged in freezing water.

During the trip, I was inspired by an elderly gentleman from Israel. He was in his seventies, his wife in her fifties. She told me that all his life he wanted to do black water rafting in New Zealand. So she went along with him.

When we emerged from the cave, he said," Now, I can die."

Outdoor Wednesday : farm in Rotorua,

In 2000, we toured New Zealand and met a lovely gentleman from Florida. He was in his seventies. It goes to show that it is never too old to travel.

I invite all of you to come and visiting my lovely country. We are a small country packed with goodies. For an added bonus, our currency is very small.

Macroflowers: Ginger flower

This post is to celebrate and congratulate my younger sister Margaret. She has been teaching at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sarawak.

Today is the Sarawak Governor's birthday. Often on this occasion he would give honours to prominent people in the society. Margaret is to be awarded with a Pingat Bintang Kenyalang (Gold) on the occasion of the Governor's (TYT) birthday. This is the highest level for a government servant for that level. The next level is the Datuk category.

Our parents have died, otherwise, I am sure they would be very proud of her. The siblings rejoice with her achievement.

This was when Margaret was awarded with her PhD from the University of Christchurch. She did her studies in Lincoln College.

Last December, she visited New Zealand with her family. ( Sam is with them in the photo.) Her Alma mater welcomed her in Lincoln.

Margaret is an expert in plants, especially tropical plants. She conducts workshop for tour guides imparting her knowledge of Sarawak plants. I choose this native of Sarawak, the ginger flower to present to her. This is grown in the tropical green house in the Winter garden of the Auckland Domain.

weekend bridge: Guangzhou (Guang Zhou) China

http://bayphoto.blogspot.com/

Guangzhou(Guang Zhou,) previously known as Canton is along Pearl river. There are ten bridges spanning across the river. The Pearl River has a length of more than 2,000 kilometers (about 1243 miles) and is the third longest river in China.

Thank you Francisca for pointing out that the correct way to spell Guangzhou is putting the two sounds together. I grew up in British Borneo were we anglicised words, and this is one old habit that I have not shed.

friday shoot out : Chairs

Outdoor chairs.

Some comfy chairs for children to read in the school library at Pt Chevalier school. The big red chair is very big and is for the teacher to sit on when he/she reads to the kids.

Member Voice for October 15 - Chairs by JarieLyn

Chairs. They appear to be such ordinary objects, but really they are extraordinary. They are functional, they are decorative and many are made with love, sweat and tears. Some show intricate detail and others are simple. Some are hard, some are soft and comfortable. Chairs are everywhere and they are all unique. I look forward to seeing a wide spectrum for this shoot out. Good luck with finding the detail in your seat.

While chatting with Jama, I am adding this, "I was busy doing my water posts so I didn't write about in Singapore, People "Chop" the seats with a pack of Tissue paper and In Australia , they put one jandal/Japanese slipper." By so doing, they reserve the chair so they can go away to buy food or to the pool.

I am posting this week's fridayshoot out on this site because over my other site, I am joining others in the

ruby red Tuesday/rednesday

http://workofthepoet.blogspot.com

http://www.suelovescherries.blogspot.com/

I took this photo last Friday at the Auckland Museum. It is a souvenir making machine. You put a coin in, and it presses it and out it comes with the souvenir picture of the building.

About fifteen years ago, we took the girls and we went to most places in New York, Washington DC and LA. The girls too enjoyed making their souvenirs too. Those souvenirs are gone, but it was good experience for the children.

Weekend Bridges: Brisbane

http://bayphoto.blogspot.com/

There are many bridges in Brisbane. We walked across from the Museum to the city.
The Brisbane River, running through Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, is crossed by sixteen major bridges, from the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges downsteam to the Centenary upsteam. The river meanders through an urban area that comprises 1.8 million people.

Macro flowers: Snapdragon

Antirrhinum is a genus of plants commonly known as snapdragons from the flowers' fancied resemblance to the face of a dragon that opens and closes its mouth when laterally squeezed (thus the 'snap').

I went to the Auckland Domain and "snapped" these flowers at the Winter Garden Green House.

As I saw the beautiful flowers, I remember my Grand Dad used to jokingly tell us about the elderly neighbour who was forever trimming his hedge and burning the cuttings, even in the hot tropical sun. Grand Dad said, when the old man dies, if you make a little fire, he will come back to life."

I think to myself, after I die, if you bring my body to this place. I will come back to life.

It really is one of the most beautiful and tranquil place on earth. I wish you can be there with me. I shall be posting more photos each week for you.
