Jackfruits
Jackfruit tree at the compound of the Malaysian Railway station in Paloh. In most places, I see the grower "saronging" or wrapping the fruit with a sack to prevent insects from attacking the fruits. But not in this case, yet the fruits are beautiful.
Another reason for "saronging" the fruit is to tell people that the tree is mine, not everyone's. It seems in the old days, especially if you grow your fruit tree on public land, everyone is allowed to harvest the fruit.
I know this because I used to grow a lot of bananas and papayas,( paw paw) on the university land, the fruits were taken. The Malay ladies who clean the common area told me to do this. After I "saronged" my fruits, people no longer helped themselves to my fruits.

Pearls and crystals
Before we left Singapore for New Zealand, my daughter D chose to stay in Singapore. She was making a lot of jewellery and ear-rings and necklace. She made this for me.
My friends admire me for having a talented daughter. They didn't think D made this. I wear it with pride and joy and only on special occasions.
Chinese quake parents want lifelong visas to visit their children's graves
There is a Chinese saying, the worst tragedy is for a grey hair person to
bury a black hair person. I started my Diary of a bereaved mum with this.
Six years ago, 23 Chinese students were killed in the CTV during the Christchurch earthquake. The heart ache lingers.

Chinese parents who lost their only child in the February 2011 earthquake are pleading with our government to grant them lifelong visas so they can visit their children's graves.
They want the right to enter New Zealand every year to tidy their children's graves as per the Chinese tomb-sweeping tradition where mourners clean gravesites and burn incense to bless the dead.
Their request has been declined because New Zealand's immigration policy does not allow for long-lasting visitor visas.

Nearly half of the 185 victims of the Christchurch earthquake died in a language school on the fourth floor of the collapsed CTV building, including 23 Chinese students.

locks of love
Once,
I kept my healthy hair to my waist. I didn't know abt this donation,
and the hairdresser didn't also. After I cut it, people asked me. So
sayang. I had such luscious jet black hair.
I wrote in my latest book, and about a woman with cancer and donated her hair. The Playgroup Club.

Guidelines For Acceptable Donations. http://www.locksoflove.org/get-involved/
Hair that is colored or permed is acceptable.
10 inches measured tip to tip is the minimum length needed for a hairpiece.
Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid.
Hair that has been bleached (usually this refers to highlighted hair) is not usable. If unsure, ask your stylist. We are not able to accept bleached hair due to a chemical reaction that occurs during the manufacturing process. **If the hair was bleached years ago and has completely grown out it is fine to donate.

The
grand finale of the Kai Chung School reunion. Francis Chen, the home
based organiser had the idea of releasing these giant lanterns. He had
to get police clearance to release these Kunming lanterns. Many of us
released them, it was tricky to get enough hot air. I was busy taking
photos. we were to make a wish before the balloons floated up and up and
up.
Thanks
to Francis, I have unlit lanterns so I can take it back with me to
New Zealand to share it with my present students.
This year, I am taking them to my ESOL class to show my students.

Government quarter
I have a query from a reader of my blogs who comes from Kuala Lumpur and
taught in SMK D.P.H.A. Gapor in Stampin, Kuching from 1980 to 1982.
In June 1982, I visited my university mate in Kanowit. She was teaching in SMK Sedaya. He writes with affection for his sojourn in Sarawak.

I told him our lives are connected. In 1959, when my Dad came back
from England, he taught in Sedaya, and we lived in a house like this.

volunteering vigilante
I read my friend's 7 dot , 8 dot post with a chuckle.
During the communist disturbance, the government imposed a volunteering vigilante, I am sure your Uncle CC Chang was a 7 dot, together with my Dad, they had to guard the police station and Queensway. One day, there was a double up, and the soldier in charge thought he was doing my Dad a favour by telling him guard the police station, you will be safe and winked he could sleep. While the others walked Queensway. Without thinking, my Dad agreed.

But later, he said, he almost wet his pants. The communists could
easily bomb the police station. Those guarding Queensway walked in a
row. Soldiers in front, and soldiers at the back. The 7 dot 8 dot
officers tried to stay away from the soldiers. They reasoned, that the
communist snipers would shoot the soldiers only. My grand dad who was
sleepless the whole night lamented, why my son has 7 dots, 8 dots, only
to be killed by the Communists.

I got an email requesting me to do another blog on Lee Min Dan.
Hi Ann,
I chanced upon your blogs when I was watching a video on youtube about Lee Min Dan ' A Chinese boy growing up in Sarawak , 1969 '. I read the comments and found out that he was your classmate and sadly had passed on several years ago. I was teaching in Sarawak in the early 80s. Still love Sarawak and have fond memories. I took a boat upriver from Sibu to Kanowit to visit my friend, a teacher. The river was so clear and unpolluted then. It's now a disaster due to pollution from logging. Could you write a blog article on Lee Min Dan and why Michael Rogge went to your school to do the filming ? I love the youtube video. Interesting growing up years of a bygone era where life was so simple and people were so sincere in small towns. By the way, are you Cantonese ? Very few Cantonese in Sarawak. I'm West Malaysian Cantonese from Kuala Lumpur. I'm 61 this year and a retired teacher. I would love to visit Sarawak again after 35 years. I would love to visit Kapit becos the previous time I intended to visit that place was in 1982. The boats won't go there at that time becos the water level of the river was low due to the dry season. Hope to hear from you and please write on Lee Min Dan.
Yours sincerely,

Hi YP,
I am sorry that there is not much news we know about Lee Min Dan, He left our school after form three.
When
the video resurfaced, and I was the only person to identify him because
he was my classmate, and I was in the video, though the camera didn't
pan my area. I queried from friends from his area, Sungei Merah, they
found news about him and he was killed in a motorcycle accident.
He has sisters in Canada who I connected. I think he had some sons who responded to comments to the video.
Michael Rogge did not make the video, he merely collected the village. He was happy I told him the time was wrong.
Why
was this video made? My school Methodist Secondary school was
affiliated to the Americans. Many missionaries and teachers came from
there. I conjecture that the movie makers must have approached the
Methodist mission.
With
your permission, I would like to do a followup blog with the video,
it's been a long time since I rehashed his story. Your email just gave
me the push.
Cheers,
Ann

Dad, the volunteer vigilante
https://www.facebook.com/sukasukisuku3s/videos/1614095351941778/
This looks like a recording of early 1970s when they were fighting the communists in Sibu. My Dad almost 50 was recruited as a volunteer vigilante with other senior government officers. The funniest anecdote was they never taught him to fire a rifle properly. They just gave him a gun. When the gun recoiled, it hit his shoulder. My mother had to apply sloan liniment on him. Jokingly scolding, old Ah Pek aka old man still be AH PING KO aka young soldier.
Going back to the World War II, my dad was chosen by the Japanese soldiers to be a Japanese Civilian worker.

Brachychiton acerifolius....Illawarra flame tree This tree is completely red. I found some up north and they are still red.
A spectacular Australian tree that sheds its deep green lobed leaves in
summer to produce a mass of vivd scarlet flowers. Requires a light,
free-draining soil in a sheltered sunny spot in the garden. Able to
tolerate frosts as the tree matures. Evergreen except when flowering.

abc letter D
When I was a baby, mum gave me gripe water. The Chinese call it Fat Baby water.
When I became a young mum, my daughter cried non stop, I was desperate, and sent my husband to the pharmacy to buy the Fat Baby water. I held my daughter, the dad gave her a spoon. It was like magic, she drank it, and it was like a switch turning the crying off.
Some one told me that gripe water has alcohol. These ones say it is alcohol free. It is dill seed oil. I also saw other brands. The yellow packaging is Infacol wind drops.
