When I was in primary school, Dad used to drive us up to Durin where my maternal grandparents and many relatives lived. One day, we were excited, we camped over night at Grandpa's place so that we could get on to the ferry the first day it sailed across the river to the other side of the river. We were awed by a boat that could take so many cars. Best of all, it was free.
Alas, over the years, people were impatient about the slowness of the ferry. They asked for a bridge which took many years to build. In fact it took so long that it was still under construction when I had left the country for many years.
Today, the ferry is no more, gone is the giant boat of my child hood memories. My grandparents have gone to their homes in the skies, so have my parents, I have yet to drive over the bridge that replaced the ferry that gave me such joy and pride.

Ferry Cross The Mersey - Liverpool Songs
http://youtu.be/eOQAKiEurWA
Life goes on day after day
Hearts torn in every way
So ferry 'cross the Mersey
'cause this land's the place I love
and here I'll stay
People they rush everywhere
Each with their own secret care
So ferry 'cross the Mersey
and always take me there
The place I love
People around every corner
They seem to smile and say
We don't care what your name is boy
We'll never turn you away
So I'll continue to say
Here I always will stay
So ferry 'cross the Mersey
'cause this land's the place I love
and here I'll stay
and here I'll stay

I've never seen a real ferry! Good pictures.
The ferry would always remind me of the picnic Tien Fen and I had with our sixth formers. We took the ferry brought our students for trip "across" the river...it was good and I would always remember her eating an apple only for her lunch. She was so gentle and kind...soft spoken and patient.
What memories were brought back to me by your photos!!
Wonderful memories. And I well remember that song, it was sung by Gerry and the Pacemakers. So your pictures, is this a different ferry? So pretty! Does the town of Durian have anything to do with the fruit?
Beautifully captured!
Anticipating for Water is my entry, hope you can visit, thanks!
Julie Kong The old ferry was so simple, nothing red like that. Remember my mum used bring us across Rajang river via THE FERRY and walk all the way to visit our grandparent near Durin. No bicycle, bike or car at that time. Then we have cars that queue up to 2 to 3 hrs during festive seasons. That is why a bridge is most welcome even after a long long wait
Philip Lu Driving to the Durin ferry was a bit of an adventure those days.
Hi Ann in my city we also have ferries. And it's very conducive to all motorist and people who wanted to make their trip a bit faster in going to another region or city. ^_^ Happy Wednesday!
See it?
such wonderful memories. we still have ferries here...in fact, RoRo's (or the Roll on/Roll off) are popular all over the Philippines. it's also the cheapest form of transport from one island to the next.
You are right, there is just something about a ferry...
I remember being on a ferry a few times, also when I was a kid. Thanks for the memories. :-)
What i recall was the 4h cruise of the Li River in China in Guilin, the sceneries are great but the river is so brown which is almost scary. At least here in our country we already have lots of fastcrafts now shortening the sea travels from 2.5h to 1h. We will wait for that bridge photo next time replacing that red ferry routes.
