Photohunt: Escape

On Thursday, I went to a course to learn to teach English as a Second language. We were doing reading. We had two seniors from the host school. We discussed a story on visiting a prison. We looked at a picture and we discussed the fence and barb wire. The students said the prisoners can't escape.

This photo was taken in Miri, Sarawak when I specially made a trip to the Mulu Caves. There were rows and rows of dilapidated houses. My host told me they were built for the soldiers. We don't need them any more. What a waste? I said, may be they could be converted to prisons, I asked in jest. He laughed back, we don't have that many bad people.

Seasons in the sun.

http://youtu.be/cd_Fdly3rX8  I am doing a course in teaching English as a Second Language. I just completed a task on teaching the Seasons as a Science subject. I chose to do a coffee table format. Most of the photos I used, you have seen on my blog posts. If you remember my spring post recently on Spring, I included my Japanese song.

Haru Ga Kita (Spring Has Come)

Haru ga kita
Haru ga kita
Doko ni kita?
Yama ni kita
Sato ni kita
No ni mo kita
It was fantastic to receive an accolade. The presenter was pointing towards my direction, but I didn't think she was referring to me, until she mentioned the duality map that I used. By then, everyone was laughing and calling out the one who was wearing the red jacket. At the end of the session, I went to apologize to her that I didn't realise that she was mentioning me. She apologized that she didn't know my name.

I like this song, one that I hear when I was in school. This song would of course not be appropriate to use to teach little school children. Of course, as an adult theme, we could apply it to seasons of our life.
Terry Jacks

Seasons In The Sun Lyrics

Goodbye to you, my trusted friend.
We've known each other since we're nine or ten.
Together we climbed hills or trees.
Learned of love and ABC's,
skinned our hearts and skinned our knees.
Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die,
when all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
Pretty girls are everywhere.
When you see them I'll be there.
We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the hills that we climbed
were just seasons out of time.
Goodbye, Papa, please pray for me,
I was the black sheep of the family.
You tried to teach me right from wrong.
Too much wine and too much song,
wonder how I get along.
Goodbye, Papa, it's hard to die
when all the birds are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
Little children everywhere.
When you see them I'll be there.
We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the wine and the song,
like the seasons, all have gone.
Goodbye, Michelle, my little one.
You gave me love and helped me find the sun.
And every time that I was down
you would always come around
and get my feet back on the ground.
Goodbye, Michelle, it's hard to die
when all the bird are singing in the sky,
Now that the spring is in the air.
With the flowers ev'rywhere.
I whish that we could both be there.
We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun.
But the stars we could reach
were just starfishs on the beach

Red: Sarawak at Sands Singapore

Sibu born, Sibu bred.
Sorry, but I like the Kampua mee.
I have been away since 1973,
I lament for the flat dry noodles.

As a primary school kid,
We went across the road.
I used to buy the kosong/ "empty" noodles.
For 30 cents, it was my lunch.

Each time, I returned for a visit,
Friends took me out to eat kampua.
The noodles were never the same.
As that 30 cents plate of noodles.

I was at Sands food court in Singapore
Sarawak Kuching Kolo mee caught my eye.
They seem to do a roaring business.
Alas, it is not the Sibu Kampua that I yearn for.

flower in Methodist school Sibu

For nostalgia, I went back to Methodist School in Sibu, this July. My second time back since I left in 1973. I went with my girl friend J Chua who returned to teach there. I popped in to see my Cousin C Chan/Tan. She was hiding in the air conditioned  senior teachers' office.  I don't remember such an office existed when I was a student. I wasn't there very long when another friend rang to take me to see more places of Sibu.

Along the entrance, I see these Turnera Subulata flowers.  Can you see the bees? I am teaching my students a song I learn in this song, Spring time has come. I tell the students to imagine: Bees are Buzzing. buzz buzz. I won't like the bees to sting a student.

In Malaysia, Turnera subulata grows wild like a weed in open fields and sunny areas.
This native of Tropical America is very much at home in our equatorial climate.
The flowers open at about 8 O'clock in the morning and close before noon.
