Scenic Sunday/Sunday Bridge: Auckland Harbour bridge

Auckland Harbour bridge started as a Tolls bridge. The people in the north complained why they were the only people who had to pay a toll to use the road. So upon pressure, the tolls were scrapped.

Just this week, The police announced instead to punishing road users who break the law, they would issue warning. The talk back radio went viral here. While the talks were going around, Two killed in overnight crashes http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10791103

Personally, I see no soft option, if you break the law, you should be puniched.

Auckland police will this weekend take a new approach to road policing - warning motorists for low-level crimes rather than ticketing them.

In his online blog today Police Commissioner Peter Marshall said from Sunday city police will trial giving out traffic warnings for less serious offences for five months.

"The idea is to find a better way of dealing with minor infringements than prosecuting people, which adds to the pressure on our already hard-pressed court system, or handing out $150 tickets."

Marshall said warnings would be a "suitable way" of dealing with motorists who don't abide by the new give-way rules when they come into force later this month "and for other occasions where driver education is more appropriate than punishment".

He said the idea had been piloted in Wellington but the results were inconclusive.

"It's hoped the new trial, which runs in Auckland City, Counties Manukau and Waitemata until August, will give us the information we need."

If the pilot is a success the initiative would extend nationwide.

Marshall said written traffic warnings were the "cousin of the pre-charge warnings" police were already issuing.

He said they had proved a "great success" with 13,802 handed out nationally in their first year.

Marshall said each warning represents about an hour of officers' time saved, and a case diverted from the courts.

He said warnings had reduced the amount of minor cases put before the courts by eight per cent.

"It should be noted that someone dealt with by way of warning hasn't "got away with it".

"Should they err again the fact that they have been warned already will be taken into account, so we hope these warnings will have the effect of reducing levels of reoffending."

Scenic Sunday: Henderson

Last Sunday, we went out West to Henderson. In the Mall, I saw a big crowd outside a T-shirt printing store. There were security guards, and load of self appointed paparazzi. I was out of place as most of them were young people. I thought they were giving out freebies. LOL.

I asked some young men, and they told me it was Rapper House visiting. I said thanks. I asked my student Dawit if he knew a rapper House, and he said yes.

This blog is for my current students that rapping is their scene. For janeva, Aom, Oam and Army.

Scenic Sunday/Sunday bridge: Singapore

The Water Engineer went to Singapore on work assignment. He bought himself a nice camera, which operates like a mobile phone.

I shall be posting his photos. This is a new bridge on the Singapore river. I don't remember seeing it when I last lived there in 2006.

scenic sunday/ sunday bridge: Western Springs

Auckland’s landscape is dotted with the cones of volcanoes that erupted comparatively recently in geological time, with the oldest (Auckland Domain) erupting 140,000–150,000 years ago. There are 48 volcanoes in the Auckland volcanic field, all within about 20 km of the city centre.

The city's roads have slopes, and sections have troughs. I learnt to drive in Borneo on flat land in a manual car. We I came to Auckland, I had to learn to stop and start at junctions which are on top of slopes. It took me a long time before I mastered this without having my car go backwards.

I saw this little bridge that joins a higher ground of a neighbouring property to the building in the valley at Western Springs.

scenic sunday/bridge: A bridge north of Auckland

After crossing the Auckland harbour bridge, there is a bridge with this unusual shape. The water engineer assures me that it is not falling down.

scenic sunday/bridge: little bridge

It was raining dogs and cats, and they had to build a little bridge so our feet won't get wet from the flood. It wasn't very successful. The rain came slanting and our feet got wet anyway.

Scenic Sunday/Sunday bridge: Jaggars track, western springs

Half an hour away from my house, I could cross a bridge at Jaggars track, and be lost among the trees and native bush. I love this place and I love Auckland, we are never too far from the beach and there are always pockets of bush. Best of all, we have no snakes.!!!!!

Scenic Sunday: Contact TriWomen Series at Pt Chevalier

Right at this moment, a group of women is swimming 300 meters, biking 7.5km, and running 3 km in my neighbourhood of Pt Chevalier. The skies are not kind, in the short time I was out taking photos, wearing a wide brim hat, the drizzling rain has made me a little wet. Spare a thought for the local residents who volunteer to manage the route.

For my bit, I have parked my car away from the route so it will be safe for the bikers. I only wish I had trained but I couldn't bear the cold water at 8 AM in the morning. I don't even go into the water in the hot mid day sun. The last time I biked was in 1975.

Way to go, ladies.

The Contact TriWoman Series is about participation and achieving your goals - whether that's getting fit, building confidence or doing something you never thought you would do.

The Contact TriWoman Series is for all women, whether that’s taking part in your first triathlon or taking on the challenge year on year. We’re all about the taking part, not the winning, the fun, not the competition and women across the country take part to achieve all sorts of goals, whether that’s getting fit, building your confidence or taking some time out from daily life and joining in on the fun!

Enter as an individual, a mother and daughter team, take part with your workmates. Do a duathlon instead. However you do it, you’ll be a TriWoman by the end of the summer!

There are 10 events countrywide,

Sunday Scans/Scenic Sunday: Vehicle in Sarawak.

I have been on Facebook and just this week, I found 2 classmates when i was in Senior High school, Form 6 as it is called over in Sarawak. What a joy to be connected again.

I shall be featuring some of the photos of things that were in Borneo when I was growing up. Some of the things may not be there anymore.

This vehicle is powered by human beings. I can't use this for my Save the World meme because I don't know if this is extinct.

Dad often used psychology to frighten us. My Aunty had a shop with one of this human powered vehicle. Dad would say,"You don't study hard, you won't even get as job as these coolies, because we were not strong enough."

Sunday Bridges/scenic sunday: Thermal bridge

My sis in law and her husband visited New Zealand. They visited Geo thermal Rotorua area. I have not been to this particular area. But I don't know if I want to cross this bridge. The water could be hot because they say you can boil an egg there.

I think I will pass. I am brave but not reckless. Last year, a 10 year old boy dropped into one of those bubbling mud similar to these and died. In another case, a German tourist went in a thermal area and never came out again.

Otherwise if you obey the rules, the thermal lands are a wonderful place to visit. New Zealand is a small place with all the wonders of the world packed in two small islands.

Auckland Harbor Bridge- Clip-ons

I drove over our famous bridge "overseas" to North shore so my son can buy his used surf board. Right beneath this very spot, my second daughter "jumped" the bridge. I was there to see her bungy jump twice.

The bridge was originally built with four lanes for traffic. Owing to the rapid expansion of suburbs on the North Shore and increasing traffic levels it was soon necessary to increase the capacity of the bridge - by 1965, the annual use was about 10 million vehicles, three times the original forecast.[13]

In 1969, only ten years after opening, two-lane box girder clip-on sections were added to each side, doubling the number of lanes to eight. The sections were manufactured by Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries of Japan, which led to the nickname 'Nippon clip-ons'. The selection of the company was considered a bold move at the time, barely 20 years after WWII and with some considerable anti-Japanese sentiment still existing in the country.[22] The costs of the additions were noted as having been much higher than had the extra lanes been provided initially.[13]

While doubling the vehicle lanes of the bridge, the clip-ons have been plagued by significant issues. In 1987 cracks required major repair works,[23] and in 2006, further cracks and signs of material fatigue were found. The clip-ons were originally to have a life expectancy of 50 years.[citation needed] Auckland City Council's Transport Committee requested Transit New Zealand to investigate the future of the clip-on lanes as part of its 10-year plan. Transit noted in this context that the plan already includes some funding for bridge maintenance.

My cousin L is a chemical engineer, and he climbs into the brdige to check it's well being every year.

Scenic Sunday: Fund Raiser at Pt Chevalier School

Pt Chevalier School in Auckland, New Zealand does it in a big way.

High lights were Celebrity Chef demonstrations from Peta Mathias and this year's Master Chef Nadia. They were demonstrating in the auditorium.

It was too dark for me to take a photo. It was a pity, because I knew Nadia's parents and her when she was little. I missed another chance to tick my bucket list to have a photograph with a famous person. LOL

Richard the Chairman of the BoT.

Lynette minding the huge raffle.

Property Manager and parent Justin.

Staff and parent Frances and Rachel minding the bar.

Staff Adele and her husband Andy. Their children came to this school.

Indulge is an annual event organised by the PTA of my school.

Indulge is Pt Chevalier School's primary fundraiser for the year with all proceeds going towards digital technology purchases and upgrades.

is a Food and Wine extravaganza that will take place on the school grounds on Saturday, December 3rd, 2011 from 6.30pm to 11.30pm.
